5 things you risk by skimping on service

Five things you risk by skimping on service.

PENNY wise, pound foolish is an old saying that rings true of many car owners. We spend a lot of our hard-earned money buying a car but then we fail to mind it because we skimp on basics – such as servicing and maintenance. Here are five possible consequences of skimping:

  • Your car’s safety can be compromised. Brakes, suspension, tyres may have developed a fault but with no one checking on a regular basis, they can pose a high risk to you, your family and other road users.
  • What would only cost a few euro if detected early can morph into a pricey piece of work in no time.
  • Anyone thinking of buying your car, or checking out its history with a view to purchase, will want to see its service record. If there are gaps, they are entitled to feel the car has not been well minded. That means you may have to take a lower price.
  • You may decide to sell when the car starts giving ‘trouble’. You can blame it all you like but it’s probably due to your negligence. Not only do you take a lower price but you have to dig deep for its replacement. A regular service/maintenance could have averted that outcome.
  • If you do your own short-term maintenance and use spurious parts, your insurance cover may be invalidated or restricted in the event of an accident. Similarly the car manufacturer may void any undertakings or guarantees unless ‘approved’ parts have been used. So wise up. Service regularly and save money in the end. Always use a qualified technician to make sure your car is safe as can be.
